New direct high-speed rail service between Rome’s Fiumicino Airport and the cities of Naples and Florence launched on July 11.

The Italian capital’s international airport will be connected for the first time with a direct high-speed service to and from the train stations of Napoli Centrale (located next to Piazza Garibaldi to the east of the old city) and Napoli Afragola (the station 3km north of the city center designed by the late Zaha Hadid in 2017 to serve all high-speed trains on the Rome-Naples high-speed line).

The other new route launched by Trenitalia departs from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station and arrives at Fiumicino in a little more than two hours.

The three new Frecciarossa routes were inaugurated by Trenitalia, Italy’s primary train operator, which is owned by the Italian government.

The connections and schedule have been perfected by Trenitalia and Aeroporti di Roma to identify the best possible integration between high-speed trains and intercontinental flights arriving and departing from the Roman hub, the busiest in the country. Thanks to these connections, passengers can be in New York in the early afternoon leaving early in the morning from Naples or Florence, according to the press release by Aeroporti di Roma.

They also make it easier to fly into or out of Rome rather than Florence or Naples, for which airfares may be more expensive and help avoid booking extra flights or renting a car.

Trenitalia's new routes from Fiumicino — officially known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport — are in addition to already existing high-speed service. Four high-speed Frecciarossa trains, two arriving and two departing, connect the Leonardo da Vinci airport daily with the cities of Rome, Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice, without having to make intermediate changes.

The Leonardo Express direct train connects Fiumicino and Rome Termini in 32 minutes, while the FL1 Fiumicino Airport - Rome - Orte line provides regional connections.
