According to ancient writers, the Etruscans of central Italy were distinct from their neighbors in the Mediterranean. Etruscan language, customs, and material culture set them apart from the Greeks, Romans, and the myriad smaller groups who occupied the Italian peninsula between the 8th to the 3rd centuries BCE.
